Character Information
Name: Walter Bishop
Canon: Fringe
Age: 67
Appearance: 3.22 The Day We Died, goes AU at the end of the ep for this version of Walter--Peter doesn't disappear and things are relatively happily ever after, as much as they can be in the Fringe universe.

History: right here and here as well.
Personality: Walter is a genius, with an IQ of 196. His intelligence and out-of-the-box thinking makes him a great mind of science. He loves to learn, explore, and experiment with any and all things, including a particular interest in fringe science. He’s proud of his work, and he knows just how intelligent he is, making him a bit trying at times. At times, he puts science ahead of ethics, though in recent years he has been more aware of his tendencies and tries to steer away from then.

He's a creative thinker, curious about nearly all things, and has an open mind to far-fetched ideas and theories. He believes anything is possible, and has proved it many, many times. LSD and psychotropic drugs are one way he achieves an expanded consciousness, able to come up with ideas he wouldn't have if he were sober. He's a firm believer in drug use, and will happily suggest other people do the same. He's just as addicted to food, happily cooking for people as much as eating it himself. Music is also a true love which he also attributes to opening his mind, or seeing things in a different light.

Much of his strange demeanor is due to his mental instability. Intelligence aside, his problems began years ago, when he was under a great deal of stress and guilt for crossing over and taking Peter from the alternate universe, and the damage he'd created to the fabric of the universe by doing so. He still carries that guilt with him now, and it colours much of what he does.

Extreme isolation made him unable to function properly in social situations. Most of the time it demonstrates his lack of a filter; he says nearly anything to people around him, without realizing it may be shocking, disturbing, or funny. He’s also very random, breaking his own train of thought into something completely different, or interrupting with a non sequitur. He’s gone so long without much socialization with others that he has no idea how to handle himself. Today, much of his anxiety, social and otherwise, is minimal, though certain triggers may set him off.

Related to that is his agoraphobia, and he has to have someone with him most of the time when going into public places, or places he's never been before. There are random times when he's able to wander off on his own, but it's usually where he's been before, or where he can find his way back home.

He's forgetful to a point, unable to recall names and places and memories, some just out of reach of his recall. He attributes this to the chunks of brain Bell removed. At times he gets very frustrated with himself, sometimes angry, because he knows he's forgotten, he knows he's not able to think as he used to before he ended up at St. Claire's.

In his younger years, he was an athiest, adhering to this belief in lieu of scientific thought. As time goes on and he'd stolen Peter, he believes God is punishing him for everything he's done, and only with forgiveness from Him can he find salvation.

Perhaps one of the biggest motivations in Walter’s life is his love of family. He’s learned to accept and be accepted and trusted by those he considers dear. When he was a successful academic and research scientist, he didn’t appreciate what he had. Now, he’s found so much and feels himself lucky to have them, and to care for other people. He would do anything for them.

Underneath the surface, he’s very sensitive and easily hurt. He tries to distance himself from others to protect himself, but more often than not he’ll end up vulnerable. It’s terrifying, but when it works and he’s able to connect with someone, he’s pleased and considers himself a blessed man.

Abilities: an accomplished scientist (PhD in neuroscience, genetics and microbiology, Doctor of Theoretical Physics, Doctorate of science in condensed matter, atomics and plasma physics); a passionate cook; knows how to load, aim and shoot a gun; can perform surgery on living beings and autopsies on the dead; while it isn't listed in his mess of degrees, in canon he is also a credible clinician. In canon, it's never been specifically stated how many languages he knows, but I assume it's quite a few, as he reads Greek and Latin, and speaks Swedish and Portugese. He can also milk a cow.
Strengths: extremely intelligent, creative, an optimist at heart, very protective of family/friends
Weaknesses: damaged long-term memory, mentally unstable, socially inept (but doesn't really know it), easily lost, prideful
Possible Jobs: Researcher of some sort. I'd say biochemist, biology/xenobiology (because he'd LOVE it, but he doesn't have any prior knowledge, so the xeno- part might not work?), Theoretical Physics which woudl have to do with the transporter technology and whatever else they'd need studied and worked on having to do with time/space theory/manipulation/whatever. I'd like to put him where he's most needed, because he'd love any of these. Or all of them... he doesn't really sleep much.
